first class constables in the land force under the rates re-
cently approved.
4. The individual increases in pay will be
according to the rank held by the several officers, I being
the lowest increase given. The whole sum proposed to be spent
on salaries under the new scheme will be $18,840, divided
among a staff of 122 men. The total increase involved will be
only $1392 per annum.
4. In anticipation of your approval of Mr.
May's recommendations, I propose to make provision for the ex-
tra expenditure involved in the Estimates for next year.
